Gateways & Modems

Gateways and modems provide the practical “on‑ramp” from field networks to configuration tools, asset management applications, and remote monitoring services. Their role is to expose device and network data in a form that standard computers and software can use, without changing the underlying measurement loop. In a well-structured system they become the controlled access point that enables parameterization, diagnostics retrieval, and status visibility for smart instruments.

A modem primarily performs protocol conversion for a single, direct connection - such as converting HART to USB or a fieldbus interface to Bluetooth - so a handheld or laptop can talk to a device. A gateway provides a parallel access point into a network for device configuration software (e.g., FieldCare). In addition to conversion, gateways can add functions like network and device status monitoring that can be viewed using a standard web browser.

Operating principle follows the same pattern across technologies: translate the field protocol on one side and present a familiar interface on the other. Modems are typically point‑to‑point, linking one device to a USB port or wireless interface. Gateways connect a computer’s Ethernet port to a fieldbus segment so multiple devices can be accessed through one entry point, with control of access handled by configuration software or an embedded web interface.

The benefit is faster access to information that already exists in the instruments. Quick commissioning becomes practical even when device populations are diverse, and concise diagnostics aligned with NAMUR NE 107 can help prioritize work and reduce troubleshooting time. Browser-based remote monitoring and maintenance can reduce unnecessary trips, while network/device status monitoring supports proactive intervention before issues escalate.

Typical applications include asset management for HART and fieldbus devices, remote monitoring of PROFIBUS networks, and temporary commissioning setups during projects and turnarounds. They are also used to segment access by providing a defined path for configuration and diagnostics while keeping control networks stable. When paired with higher-level software, gateways and modems become connective tissue for digitalization without a wholesale rewrite of the installed instrument base.
