Microwave Barrier Level Measurement
Non-contact point level detection in solids with free space radar sensors.
Microwave Barrier Level Measurement
Microwave barrier level measurement is a point-level detection method using a transmitter and receiver arranged across a vessel, chute, or pipe. A microwave beam is established between the two devices, and switching occurs when product attenuates or blocks the signal. Because the measurement is non-contact and does not rely on a mechanical float or paddle, it can be applied where contact sensors are impractical.
The technology provides reliable presence/absence detection with minimal dependence on medium conductivity or dielectric properties. It is particularly useful in dusty bulk solids duties, where optical methods may be blinded and where mechanical switches may suffer wear or plugging. Non-contact installation also reduces exposure of wetted components to corrosive or abrasive materials.
Successful use requires line-of-sight alignment and a stable mounting arrangement that preserves beam geometry. Window contamination, condensation, or heavy build-up on mounting interfaces can reduce margin, so purge provisions or protective mounting details may be appropriate. Application review should consider path length, internal obstructions, and the likelihood of stray material accumulation in the beam.
Typical applications include full/empty alarms on silos, detection in transfer chutes, conveyor loading points, and hoppers handling powders or granular solids. It is also applied where process conditions (temperature, abrasion, corrosiveness) make direct-contact point level devices unsuitable.
Microwave barrier switches integrate directly into interlocks for shutdown, diversion, and protective alarming, providing fast response and clear switching behavior. When engineered with robust mounting and environmental protection, they offer a durable, low-maintenance point-level solution for challenging solids handling processes.
