Fundamental Cable Probes
Cable probes are compact RTD and thermocouple (TC) thermometers built around a non‑removable, flexible cable for installations where a rigid stem is impractical. They are offered either without a process connection (for plugging in) or with standard and specialty connections such as compression fittings, threaded connections, weld‑on pads, or bayonet locks. The probe sheath is designed for direct contact with the process medium, enabling fast thermal coupling in many services.
Construction flexibility is a defining attribute. Different sheath and cable materials are selected to match temperature range, chemical exposure, and mechanical handling, while the cable format allows routing through tight clearances and around obstructions. This makes it possible to place the sensing element at the true measurement point even when the entry path is indirect or the final position requires bending.
The value proposition centers on solving “difficult installation” problems without sacrificing measurement credibility. Compact form factor and bendability help protect the installation from strain, minimize intrusion into moving assemblies, and reduce the need for custom mechanical parts. In many applications, the direct‑contact sheath and short thermal path support responsive measurement, which is especially useful where temperature changes drive control actions or protective interlocks.
Selection typically balances sensor type (RTD vs TC), sheath/cable material compatibility, and the practical requirements of the mounting approach. Connection choice (or the decision to install without a fixed connection) should consider vibration, pull forces on the cable, ingress protection at the termination, and whether repeatable insertion depth is required for measurement consistency.
Typical applications span machinery and equipment temperature monitoring, HVAC systems, storage temperature monitoring, laboratory equipment and autoclaves, bearings, and services involving high pressure or cryogenic conditions. They are also used where space is limited or where the measuring location requires bending the sensor during installation, and they can be applied for surface temperature monitoring of reactors when the geometry favors a flexible sensor format.
