Radar Level Measurement

Free-space radar level measurement is a continuous, non-contact method that uses high-frequency radar pulses transmitted from an antenna toward the product surface. The reflected signal is evaluated using time-of-flight, converting distance into level using known vessel geometry. Because the measurement is electromagnetic and non-contact, it can be applied to a wide range of liquids and many solids duties.

Radar is selected for reliability under difficult process conditions, including vapor space effects, pressure and temperature extremes, and aggressive media where contact probes are undesirable. It is largely unaffected by changes in density and conductivity and is often resilient to dust and filling noise in bulk solids applications when properly configured. Antenna options and signal processing support adaptation to varying tank geometries and installations.

Engineering focus areas include nozzle and still-pipe effects, internal obstructions, mounting angle, and the management of multiple reflections in complex vessels. While modern radar handles many foam and turbulence scenarios, the most challenging surfaces may require frequency selection and careful echo mapping. Materials of construction and hygienic design can also be key, depending on service.

Common applications include storage tanks, chemical reactors, corrosive service vessels, water and wastewater basins, and bulk solids silos where non-contact measurement reduces maintenance and exposure. Radar is also frequently used for inventory monitoring and tank farm management where long-term stability and low drift are essential.

Radar transmitters integrate through analog and digital communications for continuous indication, alarming, and advanced diagnostics, supporting both operational control and asset monitoring strategies. With appropriate installation and configuration discipline, free-space radar provides a maintenance-light, high-availability approach to continuous level measurement.
